Making Your Niche Sticky

>> Sunday, October 30, 2005

Being Successful on the Internet is based upon finding a certain Niche. If you don't find a specific niche, chances are that you not be targeting the right traffic for your website or blog. Other niches just happen because you love what you do and it's your hobby. It's even better if you can make it "sticky".

Chauncey Canfield is part of a great web service which has found it's own niche of followers. Live365 ( http://www.live365.com ) claims to be the largest Internet Radio Network consisting of thousands of amateur deejays, including Canfield, who share their favorite tunes on the internet.

What so special about Live 365 is that allow listeners to tune in at no charge, which can attract a large group of followers. Live 365's added benefit includes the ability for people who want new music for their iPod the ability to find new tunes all commercial free.

For now, I definitely think this is a great business niche to watch in the future.

What is interesting is that Live365.com started back in the DotCom days. I met with their CTO at the time while at the 2000 MP3.COM Summit. The startup I was working for was looking to partner with them to sell secure digital music using our platform.

I think the thing that Live365.com had going for them back then was that they had a large *community* of users. They created a platform for individuals w/ niches to share with others.

This community based model remains compelling in 2005... especially with the rise of social networking type sites (ie. MySpace).

So what's next? What if you combined MySpace with Live365? I already like to browse for new music on MySpace. Why not allow me to create a playlist and share it with others... and be able to view/listen to my friend's playlists.

Hmmm...

Hey Dan - I've been following both websites as well. And yes it is great that Live365 has been around for about 7 or 8 years now, if I am not mistaken.

I'd say you do have a great idea for the sharing concept. Since myspace is gaining popularity, who knows what the future will hold.
